Fibers are divided into two types: natural (silk, wool & cotton) and synthetic (nylon, polyester, acrylic etc.) The synthetic fibers (ak.a. artificial fibers) are man-made from various petro-chemical sources.
Our focus is on natural fibers, that form the soul of any handmade and hand knotted carpets; that are ready in stock at our Mumbai based; World Trade Center (WTC) showroom.
Natural fibers are further classified into:
- Protein (Animal) fibers – sourced from animals (examples: wool and silk from the respective animals).
- Cellulosic (Vegetable) fibers – plant sources (example: cotton, jute, hemp etc).
Fibers are the basic building blocks of any carpet. Fibers are made into filaments (filament is a single strand of fiber!) and filaments in turn are twisted to create yarn.
The wool-silk rugs are a perfect blend of wool filaments and silk filaments to create the magical and beautiful array of designs and colors.
5 Advantages of wool-silk rugs »
- Absorbs Dust – The very nature of wool is to hold dust, pollen and other particles, leading to a much cleaner environment and room conditions. This is especially good for those suffering from asthma and other breathing ailments and allergies to pollen etc.
Regular professional cleaning of wool-silk carpets by experts at Carpets of Kashmir results in having your carpet spic and span clean.
We offer cleaning services at your residence as well at our World Trade Center based showroom.
- Fire Retardant – Wool that comprises of 50% component in any wool-silk blended rug, acts as a fire retardant and offers a tough fight against fire (may you never experience it).
The very absorbent nature of wool makes it a magnet of dust and moisture, that make it such a strong fire retardant.
- Resilient – Wool and silk fibers are both strong, elastic and resilient. In fact, silk fibers can be stretched up to 20% of their length without snapping! In fact, a single filament of silk is more tensile (strong) than a same thickness steel filament.
The strong nature of wool fiber makes a carpet strong enough to withstand regular moving around of heavy furniture like table / chairs. A wool-silk carpet ‘bounces’ back quickly from such ‘treatment’ as compared to the much more delicate pure silk carpet.
- Light weight – Silk combined with wool makes a great team to create a light weight rug compared to a pure wool carpet. The lighter weight of the carpet makes it easy to transport and shift from one place to another.
- Strength – The winning strengths of wool and silk makes the wool-silk blended rugs one of the strongest and most sought after carpets.
The strength is a testimonial to several carpets being part of the family heirlooms for 100+ years! Placement of the furniture and heavy footfalls, do not take away the beauty of the carpets not does it make the carpet fade.
We use Azo-free, chrome and eco-friendly dyes for all our handmade hand knotted wool silk carpets and rugs.
