Advantages of silk carpets »
There are several advantages of owning a silk carpet; that is passionately woven with experienced hands.
The skill required to weave a silk carpet is handed down from generation to generation.
Natural fibers like silk and wool are categorized as protein fibers; as the source is animal.
Silk is obtained from cocoon of silk worms. Unwinding of a silk worm cocoon yields in very long silk filament.
A series of processes are done, before they can be used in the fine art of carpet weaving.
There are distinct advantages of silk:
- Fire resistant: silk by its very nature is fire resistant; upto 330 degree Fahrenheit (About 165 degree Celsius, well above the boiling point of water!)
- Stretchable: A silk fiber can be stretched upto 20% of its length before it snaps.
- Light weight: Typically, 100 yards of silk fabric weighs just 8 pounds! Yes, it also depends on the quality of the silk. The unit of measurement of silk is not defined in the number of fibers, but, momme – a unit used to measure the weight of silk fabric. Higher number correlates with better quality silk fiber used in weaving process. Further reading on momme: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Units_of_textile_measurement#Momme
- Strength: A known fact – A silk fiber has higher tensile (pulling) strength than a similar thickness steel wire!
- Soft: There are few fibers (man made or other wise) that are as soft to touch as silk. One of the most popular idioms in English – Soft as Silk is not without reason.
- Versatile: From the ancient artifacts to futuristic experiments on silk, there is no end to this ‘magical’ fiber. In ancient times, silk was used as cross hair in surveying equipment and a telescopes. Scientists have now experimented successfully to create synthetic skin by combining human skin cells and silk fibers!
- Durable: Among all the natural fibers, silk is the most durable one. The silk fiber is soft and luxurious due to the fact that it is protein base fiber. Carpets woven with pure silk, last for over centuries and have been collected by royal families since times immemorial.
- Easy to dye: From food coloring agents to acid dyes and everything in between can be used for the dyeing of this versatile fiber. We at Carpets of Kashmir, use Azo-free, chrome and Eco-friendly dyes for all our silk carpets and rugs.
- Absorbent: Being a natural fiber, silk carpets are absorbent that makes its pro as well as con! As an advantage, it absorbs the moisture in the room thereby acting as natural air purifier and as becoming a magnet for dust. Ensure that your precious pure silk carpets are professionally cleaned on regular basis. We offer cleaning of carpets at your residence (Mumbai only) and at your showroom as World Trade Center.
