The making of Pashmina shawl »

Pashmina shawls are weaved with extreme care and finesse by artisans with years and decades of experience and expertise.

Every spring, the mountain breeds of goat (Capra hircus) shed their winter coat that approximately weighs 120gms per goat. These are collected and the magic woven from them!

It takes hours/days/weeks to weave, design and fringe each stole shawl, scarf or wrap. The typical man hours for weaving a pure Pashmina shawl is 180 hours!

Following are the typical steps involved in the making of pure Pashmina shawls:

  • Collection of Raw Material: Pure Pashmina wool fiber is a fine type of Kashmiri Wool obtained by shearing fleece of different breeds of Cashmere goat found high up in the Himalayas. The goats are carefully shaved / sheared to collect the finest Pashmina fiber. Typically these goats are found in regions of India (Ladakh), China (Tibet) and Nepal.

  • Weaving Process: The Pashmina fiber being a delicate fiber is not ideally suited for mechanical spinning and weaving process. Hence, Pashmina shawls are always hand weaved by skilled hands. Depending on the final output required, Pashmina shawls are either dyed in a single color or intricate embroidery is one. The embroidery may be over all or just on the border areas.

  • Washing: Pure Pashmina Shawls are washed gently in cold, mild detergent solution to remove dirt and extra dye and improve the overall appearance and texture of the fabric.

Finally, the shawls are wrapped in thin polythene bags and shipped to various countries.

Pashmina shawl draping (wearing) styles »

The versatile nature of the Pashmina allows a stylist / dress designer to drape a model or a person in variety of ways.

Pashmina shawls can be worn with Western attire and blends beautifully with Indian dresses as well. A common trend is to mix and match the Indo-Western attire.

Selection of the dress to be worn along with Pashmina shawl, makes a critical difference between wearing a stylist shawl or just draping one!

Here are some of the popular ways to drape (wear) a Pashmina shawl:

  1. Wear like a shawl! Just put the shawl across your shoulders and let the ends hang loosely. Yes, you can add a broche / clip to the two sides near the neck or slightly lower down.

  2. Body wrap style. Wear the shawl with a knot in front of your chest. This secures the shawl and prevents it from slipping off. An excellent way to keep you warm during winter months.

  3. Knot it! Fold the shawl in half and wear it with a large knot around your neck. This is also known as European style of draping the Pashmina. This style is worn can be worn over any Western style top / dress.

  4. Head scarf! Wrap half the shawl and make a turban style head gear with the rest of it. Allow your hair to fall off in front / back.

  5. Style like a sarong! Wrapping the shawl around your waist and letting an corner to free flow on one side is an excellent way to create a style statement. This can be worn on Western dresses and tight fitting dresses as well as Indian attire.

Types of Pashmina »

There are various options available for a person looking to buy a Pashmina shawl.

The basic criteria are material, design and size.

Let us look into each of them.

Material: One of the most popular blends of Pashmina shawls is 70/30: 70% Pashmina fiber and 30% silk. Another popular blend is 50/50. As the ratio of Pashmina fiber reduces the price factor also matches the same.

In case of blended shawls, the weft (sideways) threads are always Pashmina fibers and the warp (lengthwise) threads are silk or wool.

Generally, Pashmina fiber is blended with silk to add sheen and with wool to provide more stronger fabric. A stronger fabric is more appropriate for the embroidered variety of Pashmina shawls.

Design: Broadly speaking there are two versions: plain Pashmina shawls and embroidered ones. Both have their own fan following among the fashion designers and celebrities. The plain colored shawls have a wider scope of applications, they can be customized with the choice of color.

Heavy and intricate designs, motifs and patterns adore the embroidered ones. The embroidered pure Pashmina shawls are loved by celebrities world wide due to their intricate craftsmanship and alluring designs.

Size: Pashmina shawls are available in a range of sizes, from “scarf” 12 in × 60 in (0.30 m × 1.52 m) to “wrap” or “stole” 28 in × 80 in (0.71 m × 2.03 m) to full sized shawl 36 in × 80 in (0.91 m × 2.03 m) and in rare cases, “macho” 12 ft × 12 ft (3.7 m × 3.7 m).

Another popular way to differentiate a Pashmina shawl is based on the fringe type: twisted or knotted tassels.
