Myth 1: Oriental rugs with abrash should not be purchased

Contrary to popular belief, abrash is not a fault in an oriental rug or a sign of poor craftsmanship. Abrash is a naturally occurring weaving byproduct that is one of the distinguishing characteristics of many handmade hand-crafted carpets. These bands of marginally distinct colors are an organic byproduct of the weaving process.

At Carpets of Kashmir; we always use environmentally sustainable dyes and ensure that the best weaving practices are deployed in crafting unique rugs.

Since all of the dyes are made from natural materials, it is impossible to guarantee that the color will stay the same. The abrash effect is produced by constantly weaving with batches of natural materials like 100% pure Merino wool and natural Mulberry silk that have slightly varying tones.

Myth 2: Never vacuum or clean an oriental rug.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness!

Yes, a regular cleaning with a brush and vacuum cleaning is an important process of keeping the carpets clean and that helps in maintaining the carpets in pristine conditions years and even decades after they made been purchased from us.

Myth 3: The number of knots is the strongest indicator of the worth of Oriental Rugs.

Only a small percentage of traditional Persian rugs’ value—and even then, only partially—is based on knot count. The knot count and country of origin have a significant role in determining the price of silk carpets.

The condition, rarity, and artistic quality are what determine how much older, traditional Persian rugs are worth. In general, the knot count and material quality of new mats determine their cost.

Once these mass-produced rugs are used, the secondary market does not value them primarily on knot quality.

Along with the knot counts; materials, size and the complexity of the design all play a critical role in determining the cost factor. We have a complete blog post on the types of knots.

Myth 4: Most modern oriental rugs are made with machines.

There is absolutely no basis for this.

Of course, a lot of modern carpets are produced by machines, but these are not oriental rugs.

Oriental rugs must by definition be handmade and hand-knotted. They aren’t oriental rugs if they’re not created by hand. In Kashmir; India, rugs are still woven and coloured using the same techniques used for hundreds of years.

Myth 5: The older the rug, the higher the price.

A carpet is NOT a wine!

Value does not always correspond to age regarding oriental rugs. Older oriental rugs do not always cost more than new rugs of the same style and size. Only if the rug is an antique does age significantly affect the price. Rugs from the past are typically more pricey.

However, there are a number of various elements that are taken into account in order to estimate the worth of two non-antique oriental rugs. The type, size, state, execution of the design, uniqueness of the design, and age are a few of the variables that are taken into account. The totality of these elements will eventually determine the piece’s worth.

At the Carpets of Kashmir, you don’t have to worry about the myths. We assure to provide the best quality products. Our artists create each oriental rug individually. No two pieces are the same. It is nearly difficult to make a twin rug because each one is made individually!
